Industrial generators. How and where to install them.

Recently, the demand for backup power supply systems has increased. Diesel generators occupy a leading position in ensuring uninterrupted power supply. When buying a generator, the question arises, where and how to properly install an industrial generator?

Then let’s understand what a generator is, where and how to install it correctly.

An industrial generator is a machine that has an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an alternator. In industrial generators it is a diesel engine, a large capacity generator may have gas turbines that drive the alternator. Alternator (dynamo or generator) – converts the mechanical energy of the internal combustion engine into electrical energy. In this way, fuel is converted into electricity.

We will talk to you about diesel generators. When working, the diesel engine gives a lot of noise. Therefore, industrial diesel generators have a cover, which protects the generator units from precipitation and the surrounding from noise. The generator shroud does not absorb all the noise from the operation of the internal combustion engine. Also, the diesel engine emits exhaust fumes, so the generator should be installed as far away from offices and residences as possible.

The generator must necessarily stand on level ground, most often a reinforced concrete slab.

There is no problem with a flat concrete surface. It is possible to make it yourself, or to put a ready-made reinforced concrete slab, on which the generator is installed. But to place the generator at a great distance from residential or office premises is not always possible.

The State Service of Ukraine for Emergency Situations notes to observe safety rules when using generators, as they are a source of increased danger.

The rules state:

Generators should be placed outside the premises or in a separate technical spacious room with ventilation.

The distance from the generator to adjacent objects (buildings, walls with windows, cars, etc.) shall not be less than 6 meters. It is allowed to install the generator near solid non-combustible walls (without windows) at a distance of at least 1 meter. The generator must be installed on a level and secure site.

Fuel and lubricants (POL) are also dangerous. The rules of the State Emergency Situations Committee note:

Fuel and oil for a generator should be stored separately, at least 10 meters away from adjacent objects (buildings, cars) in special canisters that are designed for storing fuel outside of a residential area. It is safest to store in a ventilated, separately located area with a canopy with limited access for unauthorized persons and children. Do not allow fuel to spill and close canisters tightly. In case of fuel spillage, sprinkle the spillage site with sand, which is then collected in a metal box or bucket.

Another warning from the State Emergency Service:

Any damage to electrical conductors or equipment must be repaired immediately.

These are the most basic requirements when placing a generator on your property.
